little pieces and lots of them! September 6, 2010 J. Pula (Denver Co) Very cool at teaching my 3 year old the lower case letters and the sounds they make. we broke one piece within a week. Obviously, there are lots of little pieces to keep track of and keep away from our one year old. Also, kind of annoying, there is no "m" in the set. There isn't one needed, but it's confusing for my son when we line them up. He thinks there is no such thing as a lower case "m"
Good Idea, Has Limitations September 6, 2010 K. Groh (Pennsylvania) I LOVE Melissa & Doug products. We have used them for years and years through two kids. Most of them are really good and well thought out.
This is a good product but fell a little short as a teaching tool.
There are tons of letters and words to work with and it has a lot of possibilities. But once your child knows letters and is ready to start spelling words (what I saw as the main purpose in this) the learning aspect of this is gone.
Because there are pictures on each side of each board and a cut out of each letter used to make up each word, there is no need for the child think of anything except for matching letters. There is no reason for them to sound out a word and find letters or to spell a word and try to read it. All they need to do is look at the picture and say the word.
I think a better approach would have been to have two levels of learning. One side of the board could have the picture and letter cutouts. The other side could have just the picture or just the letters. Children could then either have to spell out a word by looking at the picture or to sound out a word from just the letters without a picture clue.
It is a nice idea and great for fine motor skills, letter recognition, lower case letter learning etc. But it is very limited in learning options.
I suppose you could just take the letters and ask your child to spell a word without the boards but at that point, why not just get magnetic letters and nothing else.
Not my favorite M&D product.
does NOT use all letters of the alphabet August 13, 2010 Summer L. Fialkowski I bought this puzzle for my son who is learning the alphabet and loves to see how different letters make up different words. While I do think the concept and structure of this puzzle is great, I was VERY disappointed to find out that not all the letters within the alphabet are used. They are supplied with the puzzle, but there are no words for them to be placed. The letters like M, Q, X, Z are not used at all.....this does not make sense to me. It would be better had the makers of this product included words that incorporated ALL of the letters of the Alphabet...otherwise, what's the point?
My son loves this puzzle! August 1, 2010 I see it like it is (USA) My 21-month-old loves, loves, loves this puzzle! He's learned all of his letters so this seemed like the natural next step. After playing with it everyday for about a month, he has learned all of these words by sight. It has been amazing to watch him learn through just playing! I just wish there were more plates and letters available to purchase. I highly recommend this product.
wooden letter June 29, 2010 JAMIE PATTERSON my grandson got one of these for christmas.. i think as he learns more about words and starts understanding about the written words more, he will enjoy them, and get more out of them.
