Product Description
The southern French city of Carcassonne is famous for its unique Roman and Medieval fortification. In this clever tile-laying game, players develop the area around Carcassonne and deploy their followers on the roads, in the cities, in the cloisters and in the fields. The skill of the players to develop the area will determine the victor. For 2-5 players.

5 out of 5 stars Great Game   August 31, 2010
Alec Dublin (New York, NY)
I looked online to purchase a new game to play, as Scrabble was running its course, and came across Carcassonne. Although the game carries stellar reviews, I was skeptical about how entertaining and involved the game would be. It only took one round to dispel my reservations about Carcassonne, and it has become a nightly fixture. The game is fun with 2 people, and maintains the same levels of enjoyment and strategy with additional players.

The game is played with durable, well made tiles, and in a small box which has smart storage for all of the pieces. Carcassonne does not take much time to set up and break-down after rounds, and can be completed start to finish in under an hour.

Although the rules are very simple, the game is complex, as the great number of various tiles allows for iteration upon iteration of potential outcomes, which cause for very strategic rounds. Although there is some luck involved, strategy prevails, unlike Risk which is decided by lucky dice rolling.

I cannot speak to whether the game is appealing to children, but think it is certainly worth checking for people in the market for new games to add to their collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best board games ever!   August 25, 2010

I was introduced to Carcassonne after moving to Germany over a year ago and have been hooked ever since. Within a month of purchasing the base game I went ahead and treated myself to the Carcassonne Big Box #2, which I would suggest anyone interesting in purchasing the game to also do. I must say that Carcassonne, as well as some of the other games available from Rio Grande (Hans Im Glück in Germany), are a refreshing alternative to the more well known Milton Bradley variety of games that I had grown up playing. I can't imagine that anyone, especially board game enthusiasts, would be disappointed with this game. I particularly like the fact that Carcassonne, thanks to the introduction of the numerous expansions, can be made to be much more interesting and complex. So if you are looking for something different in a board game, then I highly recommend that you purchase Carcassonne as well as an expansion or two if you're not ready to take on the Big Box.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent game   August 19, 2010

Easy to understand, great family game and works well with 2 players as well. Involves strategy and a bit of luck. Each time the game is different since you set tiles adjacent to one another to make up the board.

If you like Settlers of Catan you will enjoy this game too.

5 out of 5 stars Best for two players, but excellent all around   August 9, 2010
S. Rider (Chicago area)
I first played this game on the iPhone, and liked it so much I quickly went out and bought it so I could play with friends.

The first thing I can say is that it's a very different game playing with two people, vs. playing with three or more. With two people, it's almost chess-like -- a strong strategy game where you try to out-maneuver your opponent and manage your scarce resources. (Though unlike chess, there is definitely luck involved, as you draw a tile randomly each turn.) When playing with more players, it can become much more of a "screw your neighbor" game -- which may turn people off. For example, there are times with three players where you make a move that helps you AND one other player equally -- thus the advantage of the move is not that you advance against all others so much as you set one player back.

It's also a good game because fairly young people can play it -- I played it quite successfully with my nephews as young as 7 and 9 (well... okay, I beat them, but it was their first game!)

It's one of those games that is very easy to learn, but has a lot of depth to the strategy as you become more experienced.

5 out of 5 stars game night   August 1, 2010

This game was fun. Our 7 & 9 year old granddaughter & grandson really enjoyed it as much as we did. Even our 4year old grandson could play with our help. It is a fun game for the whole family. It also plays fast enough to keep everyone interested. As soon as we finished one game the kids would want to play it again.
